Smart City Festival is an event that brings together key actors – organizations, companies, startups, entrepreneurs, citizens, and consumers in the field of urban innovation, IoT, green energy, and climate.
Smart City Festival 2020 (SCF2.0) is a joint project of the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom (FNF), SmartCity Education Initiative (SCEI), and partner organizations.
This event was held online in October 2020 for two days and was completely free. The global Covid-19 pandemic took advantage of our interconnected global societies to spread at record speed. These same global networks empower humanity to unite its efforts against the pandemic like never before. Drone deliveries, remote work, online services, telemedicine –The digital infrastructure of smart cities is instrumental in tackling this pandemic.
With 60 percent of the global population living in urban areas, its cities have become hubs for connectivity innovation. But new technologies like 5G networks and IoT are making it possible to include anyone in smart solutions, wherever they may be.
Topics at Smart City Festival 2020.
Topics that were current on SCF2.0 are:
- How are international organizations cooperating across closed borders to implement smart solutions during the COVID-19 pandemic?
- Police drones, mass surveillance, movement restrictions – These draconian measures are becoming increasingly normalized as governments deploy them to fight the pandemic. Is it necessary for personal privacy and democracy to become permanent victims of smart cities?
- The global COVID-19 pandemic has tested our readiness, yet new evidence shows a correlation between smarter cities and success in managing the spread of the virus. Could smart solutions make our societies more resilient to future crises like Climate Change?
- Smart city technology may seem like a novel idea, but it’s been a few years in the making. Technologiestiftung’s Victoria Boeck gives us a short history of how Smart Cities reached the point they’re at today.
- As centers of human cultural and economic life, cities are natural laboratories for technological innovation. However, conditions that make smart city solutions viable–urban density, big data, localized networks–exclude by design rural communities from participating in the benefits. Can new technology like 5G and Edge Computing help make smart solutions ubiquitous beyond cities?
